When considering cosmetic surgery, it is important that you are fully informed on all aspects of the procedure that you are seeking. Through our brochures and information pack we aim to provide appropriate guidance until such a time that a full and confidential consultation with a consultant surgeon can be arranged.
What is Cheek Augmentation?
A flat cheek or malar prominence contributes to the appearance of premature ageing due to loose and saggy skin envelope. In contrast, strong or highlighted cheekbones give the appearance of youthfulness and beauty.
Flat cheekbones can be enhanced by the insertion of implants (usually silicone) over the underlying cheek (malar bone). The size of the implant is determined by the degree of correction required to achieve the desired prominence.
The implant is introduced through an incision inside the mouth between the cheek and the upper gum.
Risks:
Infection, displacement and extrusion of the implants are uncommon but can happen and must be discussed with the patient. Symmetry is achieved by accurate markings but it must be stressed that this can never be guaranteed.
Alternative methods of cheek augmentation include the use of injectable materials made from various biocompatible fillers e.g. Restylane (sub Q), bioalcamid, aquamid etc. These have the advantage of ease of administration, being carried out as an outpatient procedure with or without local anaesthesia, but their longevity varies from product to product.
Naturally, there will be many questions you will want to ask before making any decisions about undergoing surgery.
