What is labiaplasty?
Labia reduction (labiaplasty) is designed to remove excess labia minora or “small lips” of the vulva.
Who is suitable for the surgery?
Mostly for women who feel that the labia minora are excessive or floppy and overhang the labia majora. This condition may be cosmetically unacceptable to the patient or her partner.
How is the surgery performed?
The excess labia minora are marked and trimmed according to the patient’s wishes. The defect is then closed and held with dissolvable sutures. Where clitoris is mostly covered with skin (clitoral hooding), this maybe reduced if the patient so desires as part of labiaplasty. Following this, clitoral sensitivity maybe enhanced, but there is no guarantee.
Risks of the Operation
Fortunately, significant complications from this procedure are infrequent. Every year many women undergo successful labia reduction surgery, experience no major problems and are delighted with the results. Theoretically, bleeding and infection can occur, but these are uncommon. Sexual activity should not be resumed for about three to four weeks.
When can I resume my normal activities?
This varies from patient to patient. Most people are able to return to work in 7-10 days.
