Cosmetic Surgery Regulations

Profile cosmetic surgery strongly supports and adheres to government legislation. The following article was reported in a number of national newspapers and web sites. New tough controls for cosmetic surgery have been announced by the government as two reports reveal the pitfalls of the nation's growing willingness to go under the knife in search of beauty.

There has been increasing concern over the heavily advertised clinics where surgeons carry out nose re-shaping, liposuction, tummy tucks and face lifts.

There have been a number of high profile cases involving surgeons that have been under-qualified in the actual the relevant part of the body, with for instance a ear, nose and throat specialist carrying out a breast enlargement procedures.

The less reputable clinics promote their services heavily and then fail to fully inform the client about what they can expect from the procedure.

A report by the Healthcare Commission and published today, says that there is also cause for concern about the more minor procedures that are becoming increasingly popular, such as skin peels and Botox injections, recently at a US clinic clients and a surgeon were poisoned by using impure botox.

Sir Liam Donaldson, the chief medical officer, is to announce new controls as a result of the findings of the report and a report on the regulation of cosmetic surgery, chaired by the patient tsar, Harry Cayton, which has put forward 20 recommendations.

The controls are expected to include proposals to ban doctors from carrying out cosmetic surgery unless they have at least five years training in a relevant specialty. The government will also recommend that a code of practice specifying the information which must be provided to patients before they consent to undergoing surgery and tough guidelines on advertising by firms and doctors specialising in plastic surgery.

The Healthcare Commission estimates that out of 600 surgeons currently working in the field, fewer than half have the relevant specialist qualifications, further they are also concerned about the minor procedures such as Botox injections to get rid of wrinkles, chemical peels and injectable fillers, which are totally unregulated and offered by many small clinics.

The safety and quality of cosmetic and aesthetic procedures in England needs to be brought under regular review, to keep track of and regulate new developments. The Healthcare Commission is continuing its work to develop minimum standards of practice to ensure patient safety, saying all procedures need fully assessing to establish risks to patient health.

Currently £200m a year is spent on cosmetic surgery, but not all procedures are successful with the industry paying out more than £1m a year in compensation to dissatisfied customers.

The commonest reason for patients who have undergone plastic surgery to bring a claim is that they are dissatisfied with the results of the procedure according to medical insurers.
